Hung

Hung Tran

Coach

Hung Tran

Coach

Hung made the transition from badminton to pickleball during COVID. A friend, who didn’t care for the experience of playing badminton in a “stuffy, smelly, old, hot gym” convinced Hung and his wife to try pickleball. As a big fan of the learning process, Hung jumped in and became quickly addicted to pickleball.

In the past 3 years, Hung has coached a wide assortment of friends, family and people looking to learn, bringing more and more people into the sport he loves. With a focus on building strong foundations, Hung likes to break complex shots into simple steps so students can easily understand movements while learning more quickly. His background teaching skiing to pre-teens is likely at the core of his coaching style: patient and detailed.

Erik Bio Pic

Erik Murphy

Assistant Coach

Erik Murphy

Assistant Coach

Erik likes to say that he’s been playing pickleball for 45 years… with a 40-year hiatus in the middle! He’s making up for lost time, finding himself on the courts as often as humanly possible. Erik is starting his career as an Assistant Coach at The Palms. He’s excited to share the game, help players improve, and most of all have fun on the court!

Erik notes: “I love the game, but what I value most is the community that comes with it—the friends, laughs, competition, and connections I’ve made along the way. My philosophy is simple: if you’re playing, you’re winning. And if you can get the other team to make the mistake, even better!”

Dean

Dean McColgan

Coach

Dean McColgan

Coach

Dean comes to The Palms after teaching pickleball in Hawaii for the past 8 years. To date, over 500 students have learned the art of pickling from Dean, who is a certified instructor through the Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR). In addition to coaching, Dean is a level one Pickleball Referee through USAPA and has been a ref for over 300 matches. He’ll definitely be able to tell you if that ball was out!

Fun is at the foundation of Dean’s coaching philosophy. He firmly believes that lessons should be enjoyable as well as educational. He brings games into drills and creates an atmosphere where learning is fun and students feel comfortable making mistakes without feeling judged.

Dean loves seeing happiness of the faces of his students as they begin to understand the game and see how much fun playing pickleball can be. When he isn’t coaching pickleball he is an avid traveler, journeying around the globe, often with his pickleball paddle in hand.
